Cambuslang Rugby Club get ready to kick off new campaign with cup fixture
Cambuslang Rugby Club coach Robbie Stewart will get his first glimpse of his side in competitive action this Saturday.
Cambus will make the trip to Castle Douglas to face Stewartry, in a BT West Regional Shield preliminary round tie.
Robbie, who was appointed earlier this summer as successor to Scott Forrest, admitted that he was looking forward to seeing where his side are, in terms of fitness and ability, after a preseason which has been disrupted due to fixtures being called off because of a lack of numbers for his side.
Last season, Cambus had a 47-24 league home win over Stewartry in December, and a 36-33 away defeat in September.
Robbie said: “The game has come at a good time for us, as it’s going to be a tough game. Although it’s a cup game and you want to win, this will be part the best preparation you can get for starting the league.
“Although we are missing a few players who would probably be in the squad for this Saturday, we should be confident about going there and doing the job.
“Pre-season has been frustrating for us, as we’ve not had a good run of games, and when we played Allan Glen’s on Saturday, I felt we were perhaps slightly short of match fitness and sharpness, which we will need to get in place.
“I would hope that we’ve got enough in our squad to get the win.
“But Stewartry are going to be a big test, and we can use this to our advantage before the league begins next week.”
Cambus are hoping that former rugby players who have moved to the area and are interested in getting a game for the side will go along to Coats Park to see what they have to offer.
Anyone interested in becoming a player with Cambus should go along to training on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which runs from 7-8.30pm.
Robbie added: “We’d welcome anyone who’s interested in playing to join us.”
