Sequel not so amazing

-

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (12) ●●● ●●

Mixing some good material with eyerolling moments, this sequel falls short of living up to its name.

Andrew Garfield remains impressive with and without the mask but Jamie Foxx’s villain is more embarrassing than electrifying — although Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin is a devilish delight.

The Longest Week (15) ●● ●●●

Leads Olivia Wilde and Jason Bateman give it their best shot but debut film director Peter Glanz tries too hard to combine Wes Anderson quirkiness and Woody Allen’s wit.

It’s a fun enough watch but the cast have all appeared in much better work and the story pans out in hugely predictable fashion.

A Touch of Cloth – Series 3 (15) ●●● ●●

Charlie Brooker’s spoof of TV detective shows returns in a bonkers two-parter.

Scot Karen Gillan joins the hijinks this time around with what little plot there is focussing on a new serial killer in town and the relationship between John Hannah’s Jack Cloth and Suranne Jones’ Anne Oldman.

Like the British version of Police Squad / The Naked Gun, sight gags, in-jokes and random events combine in a scattergun approach that hits the target more often than it misses.

Hannah revels in his chance to play funny and Jones, Navin Chowdhry, Adrian Bower and Julian Rhind-Tutt all offer up hilarious support.

While not quite matching the first two series, this third run still tickles the funny bone.
