BURNSIDE

Last weekend saw the start of Burnside’s final programme and events kicked off on Friday evening .

The first match completed was in the nominated pairs with Andy McMillan and past president Peter Monachan proving too strong on the night for the relatively inexperienced duo of Chris Allan and Stuart Breckinridge.

In the other opening match the triples was a closer encounter with the team of Donald Hudson, Alex Abercrombie and skipped by Pat Doherty taking gold late into the evening after an extra end victory over Tom Connor, Cammy Taylor and Peter Horne.

In the Bannerman Cup president Eddie Nairn teamed up with Frieda Thomson to achieve the top spot and take home this trophy.

Saturday brought the main event with both ladies and men’s championships being concluded. The 2013 defending champions Frieda Thomson and Andrew Haxton managed to successfully defend and retain their titles once again.

In a tricky day for bowling with the wind sweeping around the green Frieda saw off the challenge of Margaret Perston. In the gents final Andrew secured the title after a close fought bat- tle with Jack Connolly. Jack has had an excellent season and will attempt to get victory in the president’s final, which will be held next Saturday.

Also taking place on Saturday alongside the championship games, David Roberston junior managed to get the better of Pat Doherty in the final of the Sir John Train Trophy to ensure that he will have one less competition to enter next season.

Moving onto Sunday, it was ladies president’s trophy with Isobel Roberstson being pipped for the title by Jean Worrall who struck gold. Sunday also saw the gents handicap with Peter Horne winning the title, defeating Cammy Taylor on the day.

HALFWAY AND DISTRICT

Last weekend saw three out of the four remaining finals played at Halfway and District. The sun shone brightly on both days and the green was in excellent condition.

On Saturday afternoon Fiona Firth beat last week’s championship runnerup Mary McIntyre in the final of the ladies president’s singles. Sandra Hughes came back from 19-14 down to beat Helen Torrance in the senior singles. On Sunday Stephen McIntyre and David Armstrong made it three in a row when they won the LBA pairs against Alan Barr and Martin McIlree in a repeat of last year’s final. The last remaining final will take place tonight (Wednesday) when Sandra Hughes and Fiona Firth play Bernadette Sheppard and Helen Torrance in the Ladies Senior Pairs.

This Saturday sees the Newton Cup 2+2 rinks take place with a 9.30am for 10am start. The sheets are also on the board for the Dalton triples (Saturday, September 13), the mixed 2+2 rinks (September 20) and the George Mair Memorial Triples sponsored by Drumsagard Football Academy (September 27).

The club will be hosting a charity talent contest on Sunday, September 14, from 4pm onwards. All are welcome to Halfway’s Got Talent and tickets are priced at £5 for adults and £3 for kids, price includes pie and peas.

All proceeds will go to Macmillan Cancer Support.

A spokesman said: “We are still looking for people to take part, so anyone who wants to join the fun please contact Nicola McNaughtan.”

The club will also be hosting the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Support on Friday September 26.

An open day will be held at the club on Sunday, September 21.

KINGSWOOD

Last Tuesday the Kingswood seniors won both games in the Cathcart League to secure the title for the first time in over 20 years.

Later that same day in the Glasgow League the rescheduled and final game was played against Barr and Stroud at Kingswood. Unfortunately the visitors won meaning relegation from the premier league.

On Wednesday it was one up and one down in the penultimate Cambuslang and District League game. On Wednesday evening the Kingswood top five singles defeated Mount Florida at Weirs.

Last weekend was finals weekend, but due to varying circumstances some finals were played last Thursday.

In the afternoon the ladies balloted pairs was won by Emma Lockhart and Margaret McElveen in a close game against Josephine Jarvie and Betty Charleson.

In the evening the gents balloted pairs was held and was won by Robin Purves, who incidentally won this trophy for the third consecutive year, and Ross Nicol. They stormed into a com- manding lead, but Neil Lynn and David McMonagle fought back well to close the gap to two shots with two ends to go and even although they were lying on both of the last two ends, Ross changed the heads to win by four shots.

Last Friday it was the ladies Rutherglen finals at Templeton.

Kingswood was represented in the singles by Nikki Hutchinson and also in the triples. Nikki was up against seasoned campaigner Barbara Drummond and eventually lost 21-16. However the triples won well against Burnside to lift the trophy.

Last Saturday, five finals were played. First up was David Hutchinson against defending champion David Greig, but it was the former who coped better with the windy conditions to win well by 21-6.

In the ladies’ championship Chris Holland stormed to a commanding lead early on, but Marjorie Kyle was not for giving up and deservedly won 21-20.

Andrew Johnston also stormed back from being 13-5 down to win the gents senior singles 21-17 against Brian Holland.
