REMEMBRANCE Paying tribute to war dead

Towns will remember

- Douglas Dickie

Rutherglen and Cambuslang will come to a standstill on Sunday to honour the victims of war.

The two towns will hold a series of ceremonies to mark Remembrance Day in this, the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One.

Churches will have their own services from 10.45am, with congregations observing the two minute silence at 11am.

At the Cenotaph in Rutherglen, wreaths will be lain from 12.30pm while the main ceremony in Cambuslang will be taken by Dr Rev Leslie Milton at the War memorial in Cambuslang Park.

Services will also be held by Rev Neil Glover at the memorial in Westburn Ceremony and at the commemorative cairn on Gilbertfield Road in memory of the men who marched down Shepherd’s Lane from Dechmont to Newton train station on their way to the front.

Tuesday will mark the actual anniversary of the First World War’s end, and to mark the occasion the new poppy bed at the miner’s wheel in Cambuslang will be dedicated at 10.45am.

The service will be conducted by Rev Dr Leslie Milton.

Pupils from all

eight Cambuslang primary schools will be involved in the ceremony, in which small crosses will also be planted honouring those who gave their lives for their country.

Depute Provost Pam Clearie will also be there.

The poppy bed has been a collaboration between the community and the council.

Alex Black, who helped come up with the idea, said: “We’re delighted it’s happening.

“Pam and Russell Clearie really picked this up and made it happen, so our thanks just go to them.

“It would be nice to get a good turnout.”

Depute Provost Clearie said: “We are remembering the soldiers that left Cambuslang and the men who never came back.

“This is something people in the area can see and will act as a permanent tribute.”

The council have also assured Cambuslang residents the beds will be ready by Tuesday.

There had been some concerns raised on the Facebook page, All About Cambuslang, that the beds looked scruffy, but a council spokesperson told the Reformer the final touches would be put to the tribute later this week.
