Welly Walk big success

Family’s annual event

- Jonathan Geddes

A Burnside family held a successful Welly Walk for charity last weekend - despite suffering a bad break just days beforehand.

For years the Collie family have held their walks at Strathclyde Country Park, raising funds for Bobath Scotland, the charity which has helped their daughter Rachel who suffers from cerebral palsy. This year the walk was all set to go ahead, but Rachel (10), broke her leg the week beforehand.

Despite the injury, the family carried out the walk and raised £1500 for Bobath.

Mum Sharon said: “It went well, despite what happened to Rachel. She fell off a chair at home, and had to go into Yorkhill.

“Rachel is being very brave about it although she was disappointed that she missed the walk as she really looks forward to it.

“It was a terrible fright but she’s on the mend now and we’re hoping she’ll be back at school as soon as possible.”

This year’s event was the seventh annual walk the family have done and this year the walkers were encouraged to dress up in onesies.

Sharon added: “We had between 60 and 70 people there on the day, and we were lucky again with the weather, which was really good.

“We’ve always been lucky with that. There were friends and family there, as well as some of her teachers and friends from Calderwood Primary School.

“I would like to thank everyone for their support. Bobath Scotland provide therapy to children and adults who have cerebral palsy and could not do this without the support of all the people who come along.”

Over the years the family have raised thousands of pounds for Bobath.

The next fundraiser the family will be involved in is a Ladies Who Lunch event on Sunday, November 30, at the Alona Hotel in Strathclyde Park. Tickets are still available at £ 30 for a two-course lunch, a sparkling wine reception with ex-Britain’s Got Talent contestant Edward Reid.
