Christmas fun starts end of era at nursery

Decades of child care will finish at Greenlees facility

- Kenny Smith

A Cambuslang nursery is in its final year, after decades of looking after children in the area.

The Greenlees Nursery, which meets in St Cuthbert’s Church and has been running since 1969, will finally close at the end of the current academic year.

A change in legislation, and staff wanting to retire, means a little bit of local history will come to an end.

One parent told the Reformer: “Teachers are wanting to retire and changes to legislation are making the nursery more difficult to run.

“Teachers who have been doing it for over 15 years are being told they now need a qualification to continue. So all the teachers have decided to call it quits as it’s too difficult to continue.”

The nursery is highly regarded, and earlier this year was given an outstanding report by education inspectorate HMIe Scotland,

It praised children who are fully engaged, enthusiastic and excited about their learning, highly motivated and skilled staff, effective team work and leadership of staff in providing high quality learning experiences, exemplary participation of parents in their children’s learning, and the outstanding leadership of the manager.

The group are holding their lastever Christmas fair on Saturday, November 22, following on from the success of their recent quiz night.

It will be held in Cambuslang Parish Church’s St Andrew’s Hall between 10am and noon.

A spokesman said: “The fair offers a perfect chance to get into the Christmas spirit and stock up on some special Christmas goodies at the Christmas stall.

“There will also be a tombola, lucky dip, face-painting, home baking, and toys and books.

“We would love to have donations for the tombola as it is usually very well received with a great chance of winning a prize! Also, why not have a clear out of all the old toys and books that your children no longer play with? You will donate to a good cause and get some space cleared in time for all the new toys from Santa.

“A new stall for this year will be a raffle for a Christmas hamper - a great idea for a Christmas gift. We would be very grateful for donations of non-perishable food items to fill the hamper, such as crisps, biscuits, wine, pickles etc. All the usual hamper suspects are welcome.

“Also, as an alternative, any lovely toiletries, soaps or bubble bath, etc, would be welcome for a luxurious pampering.”

“Teas and coffees will also be served to refresh you after a hard morning of buying some home baking. Finally, no Christmas Fair would be complete without a Santa’s Grotto where all your little ones can get the chance to meet the man himself. Hopefully you can all make it along on the day.”

Anyone looking to make a donation should email greenleesnursery@hotmail.co.uk for more details.

Meanwhile, the last- ever Greenlees Nursery quiz night was a fantastic success, as just over £1000 was raised for the nursery funds, which is a phenomenal achievement.”

The spokesman said: “Well done to all those who helped to organise it. Thanks to Craig Whiteman for devising the questions and acting as quiz master - he did a super job. Thanks also go to Simone and Search Consultancy for the donated raffle prizes and thanks to all those who bought a raffle ticket.

“Finally, thanks to all the parents who supported the nursery by coming along and for bringing such a large number of friends and family. Hopefully a great night was had by all.”
