A planning application for a McDonald’s restaurant in Rutherglen has been approved.

As previously reported in the Reformer, the fast food giants sought to place a drive-thru restaurant at the site on Dalmarnock Road, next to the Tesco, beside the River Clyde.

It will feature a drive-thru and will able to accommodate around 160 diners at a time and there will be around 37 car parking spaces.

It is understood that McDonald’s will hope to have the facility up and running by summer next year.

It will create around 65 jobs for the area.

The proposal gained overwhelming support on the Reformer’s Facebook page when we published the original story in October.

Fast food giants McDonald’s are coming to Rutherglen after a their Dalmarnock Road planning application wa s ap p rove d by th e council.

We reported in October that the world wide chain had lodged a planning application for the site on Dalmarnock Road, beside the River Clyde.

And the planning application was approved at a committee meeting g yesterday (Tuesday, December 2).

It will create around 65 new jobs for the area.

The chain will be located next to the Tesco Superstore, accessible by the roundabout used to enter the store and the filling station.

It will feature a drive-thru and will be able to accommodate around 160 diners at a time and there will be around 37 car parking spaces.

It is understood that McDonald’s will hope to have the facility up and running by summer next year.

Rutherglen MSP James Kelly said: “I welcome the possible addition of 65 jobs as it will be a major boost to the local area. This project will, I am sure draw people to the location which can only be good news for business in the surrounding area. I look forward to seeing these plans becoming a reality.”

The prospective location is currently a brownfield site with limited social and economic function.

Council leader Eddie McAvoy welcomed the news and said that although McDonald’s had enquired about coming to the area before, this was the first time any plans have been solidified: “It’ll make a big difference, especially down at that area where we could do with some investment to make the place more attractive. It will create a number of new jobs as well.

“It’s a good company with a good reputation and it will be well used. The more people it attracts the better it is for Rutherglen.”

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “We are pleased that South Lanarkshire Council has approved plans for our new restaurant on Dalmarnock Road. The drive-thru restaurant will bring over 65 new jobs to the area, both full and parttime, and will provide significant investment for the town.

“Those employed at our new Rutherglen restaurant will have access to leading training schemes, as well as the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications including adult certificates in Maths and English, apprenticeships in hospitality and even a Foundation Degree.”

We conducted a poll on our website, asking visitors to vote for their favourite fast food restaurant. And it was McDonald’s who came out on top with 60 per cent.
