£5400 is raised in memory of Justin

- Staff reporter

The Cambuslang family of a boy who tragically died on holiday have raised over £5000 for his parents.

Brave Justin Meek suffered from a rare genetic disorder called Prader-Willi Syndrome, which required him to be given oxygen 24- hours a day. The condition also causes muscular and mental problems as well as an uncontrollable desire to eat.

Dad Stephen (46) and mum Wendy decided to take Justin and sisters Charlotte (3), Caitlin (16) and Sophie (14) to Disney World in Florida in September. However the family’s trip ended in heartbreak as Justin died on the last day of their holiday.

And while Justin has been laid to rest, the family now have to cope with expensive medical bills from the United States.

And Justin’s cousins Graeme ( 26) and Jennifer ( 26) and family friend Brogan Rooney (22) organised several charity events to give the family some financial assistance.

On Sunday, November 2, they held a charity football match at the Peter Brownlee Pavilion Football pitches in Cambuslang. This was followed by a fun day at the Hole Park Social Club in Tabernacle Lane.

In addition Brogan and Graeme took on the challenge of climbing Britain’s highest peak, Ben Nevis, in October to raise funds.

Now all the cash has come in, it has been revealed they raised a whopping £5400 which will be used to help pay for Justin’s medical bills and go towards money for his headstone.

Although determined to help their family, Jennifer admits she never expected to raise such a substantial amount: “When we were organising it we thought we would raise £500, so to get that much is just fantastic.”

The charity football match was a big hit, with many people turning out to support the cause.

It was Justin’s Dream Team versus Kenny’s Allstars. Both teams were put together by Justin’s cousin Graham and St Mirren’s Kenny McLean, who is a friend of the family.

Justin’s Dream Team won a thrilling encounter 4-3.

And the funday was as much of a success, as droves of people turned out to show their support. The fun day featured a dj, face painting a buffet and a special appearance by some Disney
