Work on revamping a disused area of industrial land in Rutherglen is underway.
Councillors on South Lanarkshire Council’s estates committee previously bought the site from Giffen and Bissett Limited, and demolished the old buildings with the intention they would make way for industrial development. The site was bought and cleared at a cost of £443,750 to South Lanarkshire.
Council officers at the time said the site would be: “remediated for further industrial development aimed at promoting economic activity and job creation.”
After the site was fully cleared in early 2013, it has since lain vacant, with bramble bushes and other shrubbery on the site being cut right back.
But now the council have sent in a team to prepare the site for future use.
Head of regeneration services, Jim McCaffer, said: “We acquired the site of the former Cathkin Clean laundry building and associated land at 72 Cathcart Road, Rutherglen, in March 2012.
“The building was demolished in early 2013 but a concrete slab covering the site was kept before site investigation works were carried out. The site investigation concluded that no remediation works were required.
“The concrete slab will now be removed and the site restored to a uniform level throughout.
“There are no proposals for the council to construct any buildings on the site.
“We hope that the works will assist in improving the visual appearance
