HALFWAY AND DISTRICT

Ladies day (sponsored by Drumsagard Academy 2001s) was held at Halfway last Saturday.

The weather was kind and 56 players took part in what is always an enjoyable and sociable day. Eventual winners were Kirsty Wilson, Brian McLeod, Elaine Ralston and Jim McKnight. They defeated Janette Potter, Tracy Hunter, Gordon Spiers and Stephen McIntyre in a winner takes all decider.

This Saturday is another busy day at Halfway and District. The mixed pairs (sponsored by Robert and Anna Dick) takes place and over 30 teams are expected to be involved. Members should note this competition will start at 10am, and breakfast rolls will be served from 9.30am.

The club held a successful Try Bowls event on Sunday and attracted some new members. They will hold another of these events in the summer, details to follow.

The gents ties have now been drawn and are on the board in the bowls house. The teams for the Bowls Scotland, LBA and RDBA ties have been picked and are also on the board in the bowls house.

The club will host 10 LBA Champion of Champions first round games on Sunday, May 10, at 6.30pm. The club are looking for tie markers and scoreboard markers, a sheet is on the gents board for anyone (ladies or gents!) who are able to help.

The popular Halfway’s Got Talent will be held at the club on Friday May 15. Tickets are priced at £5 and will go quick so those interested should see Nicola McNaughtan ASAP.

KIRKHILL

Excitement at the start of the season has been reinforced by physical and personnel changes at the club. With new building work, new club members and new team members, it’s all happening at Kirkhill.

Work started this week on improvements to the rear car park and there is no vehicular access at present. The work will provide a wide monobloc section from the concrete strip to the entry path at the locker room doors.

This will result in greatly improved personal access to the club avoiding the gravel.

Preliminar work involved cutting concrete at the entry gate and digging out a base in the centre section of the car park. Pedestrian entry from Stewarton Drive is unaffected.

Players are excited by the imminent start to the North Eastern league games which begin with Friday’s home and away ties at 6 30pm from May 1.

Six rinks team for the highly popular Kirkhill versus Burnside Tuesday evening home game have been selected and the usual anticipation for the‘derby’game is mounting as we prepare to take on old and new friends followed by the usual refreshments. Some new club members will have their debut in their first representative game versus Burnside. Newbies or oldies will enjoy the competitive spirit and banter associated with these friendly games.

The first Friday night winners of the Harry Noble competition were definitely familiar faces, with Sam Guthrie and Campbell McCulloch who were eight shots up on the night.

OVERTOUN PARK

Kirkhill, Rutherglen and Whitefield greens before inviting honorary president, Councillor Robert Brown, to throw the first jack and first bowl of the season watched by a good crowd of members and friends.

Aided by Overtoun’s Ann Eggie and new member Tommy Brown, Michael managed one of his‘wickies’to pick up two shots in the last end, thereby leading his team to win the Reformer Trophy.

Joe Paul of Rutherglen, although not winning on the green, made up for it in the raffle that followed the exceptional meal provided by caterer Wendy and her team.

If anyone is looking for a small, friendly club that welcomes new players, they will be welcome at Overtoun Park any afternoon (except Sunday), for a bounce game beginning at 1.30pm sharp or in the evening (Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays) at 6.30 for 7pm start. who finished 11 shots up.
