Treading the boards at the annual EK

- Andrea O’Neill

Amateur theatre groups from across the country are showcasing their talent in East Kilbride this week at the town’s annual one act play event, Rep Fest.

Known locally as the ‘friendly festival’, Rep Fest will see entrants from East Kilbride, Rutherglen, Kilwinning, Dunlop, Falkirk, Fintry, Stewarton and Greenock take to the stage at the town’s Village Theatre.

Each night sees a public adjudication for each play as well as a private one for the individual clubs. This year sees the return of Jim Gibson as adjudicator, a task he first undertook for the Rep from 2002 to 2004. By popular demand he has returned for Rep Fest 2015 from his success at last year’s event.

Also this year will be a youth entry from Dunlop. This relatively new category is generating a great amount of interest.

Prizes will be awarded for the following categories: Best staging; Best Actor; Best Actress; First place play; Second place play; Third place play; Best Youth Play.

Promising to be yet another year of quality acting, audiences will be treated to a wide range of genres including dramas and comedies, with some written by local playwrights.

Rep Fest kicked off last night (Tuesday) with comedy Burning Issues from Rutherglen Repertory Theatre Club and comedy drama The Regina Monologues from North Ayrshire’s McGavin Players.

Tonight (Wednesday) sees a performance by local talent EKO Players who will perform the drama Till The Petals Fall. Also taking to the stage will be Dunlop’s adult performers from Ayrshire with drama Lucy In The Sky.

On Thursday Falkirk’s Tryst theatre group stage serious drama The Lockerbie Bomber and Fintry Amateur Drama Society’s comedia del’arte The Path Of True Love.

Friday sees three plays staged with another performance by Fintry – the comedy The Ladybirds; Greenock’s Thistle Theatre Company’s drama A Galway Girl and the comedy Bouncers from Ayrshire’s Stewarton Drama Group.

The final night on Saturday, May 16, will bring a youth performance by Ayrshire’s Dunlop group – drama Fireflies. And the closing play will be comedy Error Of Judgement by Rutherglen Repertory Theatre Club before the final adjudication and prizes are presented to the winners.

Tickets cost £3/£5 or £10 for a weekly ticket. Call 01355 261000.
