THE BICYCLE

- Kenny Smith

Cambuslang Park was the wheel deal recently when cyclists descended on it for a celebration of cycling.

The Friends of Cambuslang Park held a bring your bike day, encouraging local residents to bring along their bicycles.

There were more than just bikes on the day, though, with a variety of other activities on offer to amuse and entertain young and old alike.

Chairman Edward Cais said: “We were promised a fine dry day and we got it! The sun shone, the wind blew and the clouds scudded to our great joy.

“Healthy ‘n’ Happy’s CamGlen Bike Town’s popular Dr Bike was there and a queue of children - and some adults! - formed to have their cycles checked.

“Children were also excited to try their skills at hooking the duck, knocking the coconuts off the coconut shies and rolling a penny. Families had fun playing swingball.

“The green Joint Problem Solving Unit’s tent attracted many folk, too, interested in learning how to tackle antisocial behaviour in order to create positive communities. There were goodies to take away along with advice on the mediation service, community wardens, environmental services and victim support.

“PC Richard Samson from the community police also mingled with the happy crowd to help spread the word about safety which is supported by all the organisations represented.

“And the Friends of Cambuslang Park’s traditional home baking went down a treat.”

The event was a huge success, and Edward wanted to pay tribute to all who made it possible.

He said: “The Friends of Cambuslang Park are very grateful to all the people who came to enjoy the afternoon; to Dr Bike, the Joint Problem Solving Unit and Rutherglen Police for attending; and to the few volunteers for their invaluable assistance. Thanks also go to Morrisons for donating the coconuts.

“Events like this would not work without folk coming along to support them. They also don’t work without volunteers to set up tents and equipment, run the show, and take down everything at the end of the event.

“If anyone reading this feels that helping with one or the other aspect of this work would be a good use of part of their Saturday, usually, please get in touch with the Friends of Cambuslang Park at www. cambuslangpark.co.uk.”
