Wishaw band are ready to rock with a true Idol

- Lynn McKenna

Highly- acclaimed Wishaw rockers the Vigo Thieves will be supporting musician Billy Idol at a Glasgow gig this weekend.

The popular band, who have been hotly tipped as ‘the next big thing’ announced to their fans on Twitter last week that they would be performing before Billy at the O2 Academy on Saturday, June 13.

The excited members tweeted: “Billy Idol is just off the phone and asked us to be his special guests when he plays the O2 Academy Glasgow next month! #rebelyell! ”

Billy Idol is currently travelling the UK in his King and Queens of the Underground Tour.

The rock band comprise of singer Stevie Jukes, bassist Gordon Phipps, lead guitarist Barry Cowan, drummer Alan Jukes and keyboard player Chris Gorman.

The boys combine to produce epic songs fit for stadiums and festivals.

There are echoes of band favourites like New Order and the aforementioned Simple Minds and U2; driven beats, explosive synthesisers and soaring, emotionally-charged vocals with lyrics sung from the heart and soul.

Killer track Ghosts got the band plenty of well-deserved attention.

Their single Heartbeats attracted tens of thousands of viewers on Youtube, leading to the track being chosen as the soundtrack to the T in the Park announcement video.

An appearance at T in the Park on the BBC Introducing Stage saw a huge crowd gather as the boys rocked their first appearance at a summer festival.

The group went back to where it all began last month to put on a show for their local fans.

They performed to a sell-out crowd at Wishaw’s recently-refurbished The Live Lounge at the local Commercial Hotel.

The lads’ career started with a weekly gig at the club and they were delighted to be back in their home town to reminisce and perform.

Singer Stevie Jukes said: “We used to put on monthly club nights at The Soul Suite (Live Lounge) and bring other unsigned bands through to play.

“That’s how we started to build a following and also networked with other bands from the music scene in Scotland.

Saturday nights show kicks off at 7pm.

Tickets are £42 and can be bought from www.ticketweb.co.uk.
