For­mer MP ad­mits driv­ing at 99mph on mo­tor­way

For­mer Ruther­glen MP Tom Greatrex has been fined af­ter he was caught speed­ing on a mo­tor­way at 99mph.

The Cam­bus­lang man, who lost his seat in May’s Gen­eral Elec­tion, was clocked driv­ing at high speed on the M74 three days af­ter the poll on May 7.

He was caught by po­lice trav­el­ling north in his Volvo es­tate at Abing­ton in La­nark­shire on May 10 this year and charged with speed­ing.

Greatrex (40), was the MP for Ruther­glen and Hamil­ton West from 2010 un­til he lost out by more than 9000 votes to the SNP’s Mar­garet Ferrier.

At La­nark Jus­tice of the Peace Court, he was fined £500 and had five penalty points added to his driv­ing li­cence.

He did not ap­pear in court and pled guilty by let­ter. He told the court in the let­ter he had been un­em­ployed for the last two months and had £680 of ex­penses to pay out each month.

JP James John­stone re­duced his fine from £750 to £500 be­cause of his early plea and al­lowed him to pay it off at £100 per month.

Kent-born Greatrex, was elected with a ma­jor­ity of 21,002 at the 2010 Gen­eral Elec­tion.

He was the Shadow Un­der Sec­re­tary of State for Scot­land sup­port­ing Ann McKechin, Shadow Sec­re­tary State for Scot­land un­til Oc­to­ber 2011, when he was made Shadow Energy Min­is­ter.

He was tipped as one of the ris­ing stars of the Labour Party un­til los­ing his seat.
