Former MP admits driving at 99mph on motorway

-

Former Rutherglen MP Tom Greatrex has been fined after he was caught speeding on a motorway at 99mph.

The Cambuslang man, who lost his seat in May’s General Election, was clocked driving at high speed on the M74 three days after the poll on May 7.

He was caught by police travelling north in his Volvo estate at Abington in Lanarkshire on May 10 this year and charged with speeding.

Greatrex (40), was the MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West from 2010 until he lost out by more than 9000 votes to the SNP’s Margaret Ferrier.

At Lanark Justice of the Peace Court, he was fined £500 and had five penalty points added to his driving licence.

He did not appear in court and pled guilty by letter. He told the court in the letter he had been unemployed for the last two months and had £680 of expenses to pay out each month.

JP James Johnstone reduced his fine from £750 to £500 because of his early plea and allowed him to pay it off at £100 per month.

Kent-born Greatrex, was elected with a majority of 21,002 at the 2010 General Election.

He was the Shadow Under Secretary of State for Scotland supporting Ann McKechin, Shadow Secretary State for Scotland until October 2011, when he was made Shadow Energy Minister.

He was tipped as one of the rising stars of the Labour Party until losing his seat.
