Injury worries for the Spiders

Three players crocked in pre-season

- Will Henshaw

Queen’s Park boss Gus MacPherson says the Spiders’ pre-season schedule may have been too intensive as three of his star players were injured.

On Friday the Hampden men took on North of England side Consett and emerged 3-1 winners.

The day after, they drew 3-3 with Bishop Auckland as they completed their Durham training camp.

During the training camp, Gavin Mitchell suffered ankle ligament damage and could be out for a number weeks while Scott Gibson got a knock and Sean Burns endured a groin strain.

As a result Gus said the pre-season schedule is not something he’s looking to repeat: “The training camp went okay.

“What I would say is playing two games in two days is maybe a bit much and it’s not something we would do again in future.

“The playing squad we took was a bit too small and you end up having to get players to play two games in two days and that’s not fair on them.

“As a result three of our boys were injured and two could miss the start of the season.”

Their last match of pre-season took place as the Reformer went to press, as the Spiders prepared to take on Beith Juniors.

Despite the injuries, there was some good news for QP fans as the club announced another singing.

Queen’s Park have signed midfielder David Gault from Blantyre Vics. Gus said the 25-year-old will add some versatility to the squad: “He can play up front and midfield so he gives us options.

“We’re still working on one or two more signings but that will be it.”

On Saturday Queen’s will start competitive action as they take on Edinburgh City in the Petrofac Cup first round which will take place at Meadowbank Stadium.

Gus knows his side will be favourites for the tie, but is taking nothing for granted when they take on the Lowland Football League side: “It will be a tough game, we wouldn’t expect anything less. Edinburgh have shown they are a good side from their pre season results and we will have to be sharp to progress.”
