Cambus look the part as fixtures are revealed

- Kenny Smith

Cambuslang Rugby Club captain Gregor Jones says the side are the most prepared they’ve ever been, ahead of the new season.

Last season, Cambus won promotion to BT West League One, after finishing as runnersup behind Oban Lorne - and in an ironic twist, they will host the champions at Coats Park in their first game of the season.

Cambus are traditionally slow starters and have lost their opening fixture of the season in each of the last few years, but they hope to change that this year.

Gregor said: “Having a home start is always a real boost, but we’re notoriously bad on the first day of the season!

“Having Oban isn’t the fixture I’d have picked, but we’re going to be going into it as the most prepared we’ve ever been.

“One of the returning players, Chris Hughes, is a personal trainer, and he’s been working with us all, doing conditioning work. He’s going to have a big impact.

“It’s going to make a big difference - a few years ago, we didn’t have any preparation at all, and it’s such a big difference. Things are looking really promising early on.”

The fixtures for the season are:

September 12. Oban Lorne (H). September 19, Helensburgh (A). September 26, Carrick (H).

October 3, Garnock (A). October 17, Lenzie (A). October 24, Allan Glen’s (A). October 31, Glasgow Academicals (A).

November 7, Kilmarnock (H). November 14, Newton Stewart (A). November 21, Helensburgh (H). November 28, Oban Lorne (A).

December 5, Carrick (A). December 12, Garnock (H). December 19, Lenzie (H).

January 9, Allan Glen’s (A). January 16, Glasgow Academicals (H). January 23, Kilmarnock (A). January 30, Newton Stewart (H).

Gregor added: “It looks like an early finish because there’s only 10 teams in the league, but there will be postponements in there, I’m sure. Last year, we were really proud because we didn’t cancel one game at home, because our ground is in such good condition.

“We’re looking at the next two years as a strategy.

“This year, we want to find our feet and help the team develop in this league, and then the following year, go for promotion.

“We know where we want to be, and help the team grow.”
