Exploring the bible is a big hit

- Douglas Dickie

Children in Croftfoot have been exploring the bible this week.

Croftfoot Parish Church has been running its always popular Rise and Shine Club.

Now in its 35th year, the club helps children understand the Bible, while having a great time in the process.

Activities this year include aerobics, drama, teaching, arts and crafts, football, dancing and games.

The theme is “Polar Explorers” with the church stage done up like the north pole.

Around 60 children turned up for the first day on Monday with 80 dropping by yesterday (Tuesday).

Group leader, Alison Eadie, said the theme helped to tie in with stories from the Bible: “We are exploring the bits of the Bible that look at the first disciples and how they went on their journey.

“It takes us through their first adventures and the problems they faced. The kids have a great time, there’s lots of variety but it’s important to get the message across that there’s lots in the Bible that can help them.”

The club is running until Friday (August 7) and will end with a closing service.

Also starting tonight ( Wednesday) is the Infusion group aimed primarily at young adults.

This is the fourth year of the evenings, which feature quizzes, sports and food, and are aimed at teenagers in S3 at school or over.

Croftfoot minister Rev Robert Silver believes the evenings have several benefits.

He said: “It’s a youth club with pool, volleyball, table tennis and then we usually have a BBQ at the end, too.

“There’s quizzes and we do talk about the Christian faith as well. It seems to go down very well, and we usually get between 12 and 20 people coming along.

“What we’ve found in the past is that while everyone has a lot of fun, there’s an interest in the spiritual issues, too - they are always quite interested in talking about it, and it’s a two way conversation - it’s not about just talking to them, but about having a conversation and hearing their thoughts.”

The Infusion nights then start at 7.30pm.
