Big kick-off for Glens and Lang

-

Rutherglen Glencairn and Cambuslang Rangers will get their competitive seasons underway on Saturday in the Euroscot Engineering Sectional League Cup.

Glens will make the trip south to East Kilbride, while Lang will be just along Hamilton Road when they travel to Blantyre Vics.

Glens fans will be looking for a repeat of 2007 when they lifted the trophy.

Boss Willie Harvey said this week: “It’s a competition we could do well in or we could bomb out, so I won’t be making any predictions.

“We will be trying. A lot of managers make out it’s part of their pre-season but I have been in dressing rooms before where a manager has said that and you soon find out if they mean it after a 1-0 defeat.”

For Cambuslang Rangers boss Paul McColl, the game will mark his competitive bow.

The gaffer remains confident they can take something from a team who have just won promotion to the Superleagues.

He said: “Blantyre Vics are a very, very good team. I think you could count on your hands how often they’ve lost in the past couple of years.

“It will be a really hard game to take on, but hopefully we can get a result.”

After the opening fixtures, the two sides will face off for a local derby at New Southcroft next Wednesday (August 12).
