QP miss top spot
Annan deny Spiders
Queen’s Park failed to find the win against Annan that would have helped them climb to the top of the SPFL League Two table.
Gus MacPherson’s side were among seven teams separated by just three points at the start of Saturday afternoon’s matches.
The Spiders made two changes to the side that defeated Elgin in the Petrofac Training Cup last weekend as David Galt and John Carter gave way to Joe Bradley and Sean Burns.
Queen’s started brightly, enjoying plenty of possession but it was the home side who produced the first real threat after eight minutes. Todd turned McGeever neatly at the edge of the box and got a shot away but cleared the bar.
Both Annan and Queen’s Park made an early substitution after Watson and Duggan pulled their hamstrings in the opening 20 minutes.
On 31 minutes, Queen’s Burns did well to win the ball and drive forward before feeding McKernon. He took a couple of strides and then let fly from 30 yards but it came back off the wrong side of the woodwork with keeper Hart nowhere in sight.
Five minutes later, Annan’s Isadolor, who had been a threat throughout the firsthalf, punished the away side. It was all too easy for Annan as one ball from Flynn cut the defence apart and the striker galloped into the space to fire past Muir.
The league leader’s attacking intent paid off four minutes from the break as a corner on the right was whipped in towards the near post and Weatherson reacted the quickest to flick the ball into the net.
Precious little happened until 25 minutes after the interval. Queen’s found themselves back in the game when Bradley let fly with a long distance strike. Again, the woodwork denied the Spiders, but this time the rebound was back into the penalty box where Woods twisted acrobatically to volley home.
With 15 minutes left, Queen’s McElroy fed Ralston who laid the ball off to Bradley but his shot went just over.
Queen’s were desperate to get forward, and were punished with virtually the last kick of the ball. Ralston tried to clear but and the youngster tried to hook it but gave the ball to McColm. His shot was saved but Todd was on hand to net.
