Proud to accept Deputy Lieutenant post

A Cambuslang woman is one of six people to be named as a Deputy Lieutenant for Lanarkshir­e. She has been commission­ed by the Lord Lieutenant on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen.

Janet Low was welcomed to her new role by Lord-Lieutenant Mushtaq Ahmad OBE at a ceremony in the Civic Centre, Motherwell on October 14.

She is a Developmen­t Co-ordinator for the Hands On Project at Lightburn Elderly Associatio­n Project (LEAP) and helps to provide support services for older people.

And now Janet will assist LordLieute­nant Mushtaq Ahmad with his duties in Lanarkshir­e.

Her duties will include attending citizenshi­p ceremonies, special birthdays and potential Royal visits including the Queen’s Garden Party.

Janet said: “I was extremely proud to be given this honour. I was approached by some lovely people eight months ago and I said I would be delighted to accept. I couldn’t believe it.

“I am so very happy , pleased and honoured to have received my commission as Deputy Lieutenant and will be delighted to support Mushtaq Ahmad the Lord Lieutenant.”

Janet has been working in the Cambuslang and Rutherglen areas for more than 20 years.

She worked most of her life in banking and her last position was a corporate consultant for cash management .

Janet changed her career path 20 years ago and started working at Create Ltd a registered charity, as a developmen­t officer in the community covering Cambuslang and Rutherglen area.

Create merged with Solve and H. E. K to form Voluntary Action South Lanarkshir­e ( Vaslan) and Janet was promoted to team leader of the core team covering all of South Lanarkshir­e .

She left Vaslan to work part time at LEAP Lightburn Elderly Associatio­n Project who are a local Charity supporting over 50’s with handy jobs and befriendin­g.

She is now a developmen­t officer covering Cambuslang, Rutherglen, East Kilbride, Strathaven and Stonehouse.

Janet was named as Deputy Lieutenant along with Shuming Kong from Hamilton, Derrick Hannan from Airdrie, Liaquat Ali JP of Bothwell, Retired Colonel Stuart Roberts and Millar Stoddart.

Lord-Lieutenant Mushtaq Ahmad said: “I would like to congratula­te the new Depute Lieutenant­s, and I look forward to working with them during their commission in serving the people of Lanarkshir­e.”
