Church walkers enjoy a trip to the Lake District

- Jonathan Geddes

Cambuslang Parish Church’s Walking Group recently had an enjoyable trip away to the Lake District.

After a difficult summer blighted by poor weather, the club were pleased to get some sunshine on the trip.

The Saturday walk started at an old slate mine at Honister Pass.

The party walked up a steep path until one end of Buttermere Lake was in sight.

At this point some of the party headed down towards the Lake and then on to Buttermere.

The more adventurous continued to climb upwards to the summit of Hay Stacks, which is just less than 2000 feet.

From here the party again split up with some heading down to the lake and on to Buttermere and some heading up to the next summit, High Crag.

Again the party split up with some heading down yet another path to the lakeside and then on to Buttermere and some climbing two more summits, High Style and finally Red Pike.

The whole party met up in Buttermere for a well-earned refreshment.

The Sunday walk was a bit more sedate, from the Hotel in Portinscale, through Keswick and on to the village of Threlkeld where instead of the usual sandwich and a flask of coffee lunch was enjoyed in a café.

On the return some of the party went up a hill to see the Castlerigg standing stones, everyone stopped at Keswick for refreshments on the way back, a great end to a nice walk.

In October the Walkers continued their quest along the John Muir Way. This time the walk took the group from the Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh to Prestonpans.

This was a very pleasant walk with lunch taken at the beach in Musselburgh.

As the group neared Prestonpans they were able to witness the last flying Vulcan Bomber as it flew up the Forth as part of its farewell tour round the UK.

The next walk will take place on Saturday, November 7.

This walk is the annual Mystery Walk and will be about 6 miles; those interested in coming along should meet outside Cambuslang Parish Church at 8:30 am. Travel will be in shared cars.
