A blooming great project

-

Keen ga rde ne r s in Cambuslang have been called into action as the town has been awarded £35,000 to kick start an improvement project.

Cambuslang in Bloom is a new project which aims to bolster the appearance of the town with the use of street planters, hanging baskets and plant beds.

A joint project between Cambuslang Community Council and Cambuslang Allotments, the community council was awarded £ 35,000 from the Scottish Government Town Centre Communities Capital Fund to buy planters, tools, plants, baskets, soil and other materials.

In the first stage, the funding will be used to provide 15 large street planters along Cambuslang Main Street, hanging baskets outside the shops, barrier baskets on the street railings and a new plant bed between Bank Street and the underpass.

With 40 shopkeepers expressing an interest in hanging baskets outside their premises and 15 large planters to be filled, the community council is calling on keen gardeners to dedicate some time to the project.

It is hoped individuals could lend a few hours each month to help with planting, dead- heading, pruning, weeding and looking after the plants.

Universal Connections youth club have set up the Cambuslang in Bloom: UC Youth Team, and some local schools are also keen to help grow and maintain the plants.

All tools and gloves will be provided for those taking part in the project.
