Association in hot water over boiler problems

- Edel Kenealy

Residents of a Fernhill development have hit out at a housing association as persistent problems with their boilers have left them with a poor water and heat supply.

Tenants and home owners of Neilvaig Crescent and Castleferm Cresent say they are without hot water in some rooms of their homes and are experiencing problems with radiators as the water pressure in their boilers repeatedly falls to zero.

Now householders are demanding West of Scotland Housing finds a longterm solution.

Davy O’Neil who is a property owner in Neilvaig Crescent said: “The housing association is quick enough to respond but they can’t seem to fix the problem.

“They have not turned up to the last two South Lanarkshire Council meetings in Fernhill and have proven terrible to deal with.

“They will not come out to see me because my home is under part ownership. But I have had this problem since I moved in three years ago when the houses were first built. It was the West of Scotland Housing Association that built the houses so surely it’s their responsibility to repair or replace the boilers.”

The residents’ plight has been taken up by councillor Robert Brown who told the Reformer he has been liaising with the housing association.

He said: “This is one of a number of issues which the residents have had with West of Scotland Housing Association over the houses in Neilvaig Crescent.

“I took it up with the housing association earlier this week after being contacted by one of the residents. I have now spoken to the housing association’s property director further so I am hopeful that action will be taken to resolve the issue.”

West of Scotland Housing Association said it was aware of the problems in Fernhill, but added it was not responsible for servicing or maintaining heating systems in the homes of owner occupiers.

Dan Wood, director of property services said: “We are committed to providing a first-class service to our tenants and are disappointed there has been issues with some central heating systems in the Fernhill area. We continue to respond to heating repair requests from our tenants and to liaise with our heating maintenance contractor to address any ongoing concerns.

“None of our tenants are without heating and hot water. We welcome an open discussion with tenants and other interested parties about any concerns and encourage tenants to get in touch with us if they have ongoing concerns.”
