Accies savour cup victory over in-form Eaglesham

-

Eaglesham.............. 0 Newton Academ ..... 2 Cambuslang’s Newton Academical travelled to Barrhead in the Challenge Cup second round knowing they would have to be at their best to face Eaglesham who they had twice failed to beat previously.

The hosts were also unbeaten in their last nine league games but it was Newton who came out on top after an excellent second half display.

Eaglesham started well and looked dangerous in attack. A floated ball was fed through for Eaglesham and a late challenge from Andy McGladrigan resulted in a penalty for the hosts and a yellow card for the shot-stopper. McGladrigan was able to amend his mistake with a nice save to his left.

After the break, the heavy park started to cut up and both sides seemed to struggle to keep possession.

But Thomas Houston won the ball inside the Eaglesham half and found Jones who was able to thread the ball through to Nad Zeb to compose himself and pass the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.

Kieran Zeb replaced Kevin Coyle and made an instant impact with his pace.

Moments after taking the lead, Martin Jones found himself with a bit of space just outside the box and rifled home a great strike into the top right-hand corner. Newton Academical now face East Kilbride Rolls Royce or Rannoch in the next round.
