Spartans put rivals to sword in derby

-

Spr’hall Spartans.. 4 Fernhill United.......3 Spartans and Fernhill served up a rip roaring derby in the Sunday Central AFL Health Rewards quarter final.

It was the Division One side, Fernhill, who struck first after Faulds was deemed to have barged the United striker in the box and Donnelly stepped up to coolly slot the ball home.

Spartans pushed forward in pursuit of the equaliser only to spurn great chances.

In the second half Spartans continued to push forward and their endeavour was rewarded when Cunningham found himself in space, drove forward and smashed a low shot home.

United hit back after their striker beat the offside trap and calmly rounded the keeper.

Great play between Reid and Neely saw Reid collect a return pass and wrong foot a defender, before steering the ball beyond the keeper.

Spartans edged in front when Dundas found the goal from just inside the box and grabbed a fourth after Cunningham out-muscled the Fernhill centre half.

Colin McGahey missed a penalty for Spartans before Donnelly headed home a United consolation.
