A 15- year- old Cambuslang footballer is said to have caught the eye of professional clubs after scoring on his debut for Alloa Athletic’s first team.

Declan McDonald came on as a substitute for The Wasps in their Stirlingshire Cup game against Stenhousemuir on April 5.

The Trinity High School pupil scored Alloa’s second goal in a 2-0 win with 25 minutes to go.

Declan, who is also a Scotland Under- 14 cap, has been playing for the Wasps for two years since he was scouted at a School Scottish Cup Final.

He was taken on trial at Alloa and has since gone on to score 22 goals for the under-17s.

The youngster told the Reformer he was “buzzing” to get his first senior goal.

He said: “It was really good to score. I came on for the last half an hour or so and had a shot that was saved by the keeper. I then scored a header from a corner near the end which was the second goal.

“It was the first time I had played for the senior team but I have been training with them. It is quite hard but the boys help you out.

“There was only three of the younger boys playing against Stenhousemuir and the rest were first-team regulars.”

Declan has also scored goals at international level. He bagged two for Scotland Under-14s in their development tournament in Portugal against the Czech Republic in May 2015.

The game marked his international debut and he has now made three more appearances for his country.

He added: “The team is made up of players from different teams like Celtic and Rangers. I have always played as a striker but I play in midfield for the school team. I train three times a week with Alloa and play for Trinity which helps keeps me fit. The school give me time off to train during the day.”

Declan’s ambition is to become a professional and has talked about the possibility of leaving Trinity High at the end of the school year.

Proud dad Steven McEwan, who was also a talented footballer, revealed that Declan’s progress had turned a few heads at other professional clubs, adding: “He’s improving all the time from his days playing for Cambuslang Boy’s Club to playing with Alloa.”

Alloa play Falkirk in the final of the Stirlingshire Cup – a competition that was founded in 1883.

Declan is hoping to make an appearance in the match but is also hopeful he will get his chance in Alloa’s first team squad next season following their relegation to the Ladbrokes League One.
