Gary’s on red alert with Fringe show

Actor to celebrate Ginger Power with fun cabaret

- Johnathan Geddes

Castlemilk actor Gary Lamont is on red alert with a new show for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.

It will be a one-man cabaret show paying tribute to fellow redheads, from Cilla Black to Simply Red.

Called ‘Gary Lamont – What a Riddy!’ the actor, who plays hairdresser Robbie in the Scots soap, hopes his Fringe debut will win him a MOGO – Music of Ginger Origin.

He said: “The show is my contribution to the ‘Ginger Power’ movement.

“I want to celebrate how fantastic it is to be redheaded.

“It’s also my bold attempt to try and win a MOGO award – that’s Music of Ginger Origin .

“When we first came up with that idea we thought we had made up a good joke but it turns out they actually do exist, they’re run by a nice man called Barry who lives in Leeds and I’m determined that I’m going to be the MOGO winner for best new artist 2016.”

And the show title came from his soap pal Dawn Steele, after they were joking around.

He added: “I told a few close friends that I was thinking of doing a one-man show and everyone was really encouraging except Dawn who immediately said: ‘Oh my God, you’re gong to be up on stage singing, what a riddy!’

“We laughed so much about it and realised that had to be the title of the show.”

And the soap favourite admits there’s one act in particular he’s nervous about.

He added: “Eddi Reader is the one I’m most nervous about as I’ve met her many times and she follows me on Twitter.

“So when I launch the video where I completely rework her Fairground Attraction hit Perfect as a gospel number, I know she might well see it.

“I just hope she doesn’t batter me for ruining her big tune.”

The show is at The Boards, Edinburgh Playhouse from August 9-13.

Tickets are available online through www.edfringe.com or by telephoning 0131 226 0000.
