Amnesty for air weapons

A three week sur­ren­der cam­paign has been launched for any­one who owns an air weapon but does not want to li­cence it.

With the in­tro­duc­tion of the Air Weapon and Li­cens­ing (Scot­land) Act 2015 a sur­ren­der cam­paign will run un­til Sun­day, June 12, to sur­ren­der weapons to the po­lice.

The move comes af­ter new rules will make it il­le­gal for any­one to pos­sess an air weapon with­out a li­cence un­der the Act which comes into force from De­cem­ber 31, 2016.

Prior to this date, any in­di­vid­ual or group has six months to ei­ther ob­tain a cer­tifi­cate or sur­ren­der their weapon(s) to the po­lice.

Un­der no cir­cum­stances should any­one take pos­ses­sion of, or re­move any air weapon from a dis­posal site.

In ev­ery case, Po­lice Scot­land should be con­tacted to at­tend and safely han­dle and re­move any air weapons to a po­lice of­fice.
