Cup takes Gus back to old home

Queen’s Park gaffer Gus MacPher­son will face fa­mil­iar faces when his side take on Queen of the South in the newly for­mat­ted Bet­fred League Cup.

The Ham­p­den Park boss, who spent just un­der a year at Palmer­ston in sea­son 2011/ 12, will also see his team play the Premier­ship side Par tick This­tle and fel­low League One sides Air­drieo­ni­ans and Sten­house­muir.

Clyde, mean­while, were drawn against Kil­marnock, Greenock Mor­ton, Ber­wick Rangers and Al­bion Rovers.

In each group, teams will play each other once in a round-robin for­mat on July 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30, sub­ject to live broad­cast se­lec­tions.

In the first round group stage there are three points for a win and one point for a draw, with drawn matches in the group stage go­ing straight to a penalty shoot-out and the win­ner be­ing awarded a bonus point.

Eight first round group stage win­ners and the four best run­ners- up progress to the sec­ond round, joined by the SPFL’s four teams who qual­i­fied for Euro­pean football last sea­son; Celtic, Aberdeen, Heart of Mid­loth­ian and Hiber­nian.

The com­pe­ti­tion con­cludes with the Bet­fred Cup Fi­nal at Ham­p­den Park on Sun­day, Novem­ber 27.
