Cup takes Gus back to old home

- Murray Spooner

Queen’s Park gaffer Gus MacPherson will face familiar faces when his side take on Queen of the South in the newly formatted Betfred League Cup.

The Hampden Park boss, who spent just under a year at Palmerston in season 2011/ 12, will also see his team play the Premiership side Par tick Thistle and fellow League One sides Airdrieonians and Stenhousemuir.

Clyde, meanwhile, were drawn against Kilmarnock, Greenock Morton, Berwick Rangers and Albion Rovers.

In each group, teams will play each other once in a round-robin format on July 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30, subject to live broadcast selections.

In the first round group stage there are three points for a win and one point for a draw, with drawn matches in the group stage going straight to a penalty shoot-out and the winner being awarded a bonus point.

Eight first round group stage winners and the four best runners- up progress to the second round, joined by the SPFL’s four teams who qualified for European football last season; Celtic, Aberdeen, Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian.

The competition concludes with the Betfred Cup Final at Hampden Park on Sunday, November 27.
