Goosebumps (PG)

Thankfully Jack Black and director Rob Letterman’s second link-up vastly improves on their first, the abysmal Gulliver’s Travels.

From the creepy next door neighbour to the comical best friend, the script pushes all the right buttons for the family horror genre.

Black’s role as RL Stine – the author of the Goosebumps books – is his best in years and young co-stars Dylan Minnette and Odeya Rush share a cute bond.

Though some of the CGI is a bit ropey, the set pieces are good fun, taking in an ice rink, supermarket and cemetery.

Goosebumps is a relentless nostalgia ride that’ll win over fans of the books – and young newbies.
