Do teenagers need more outlets for fun?

Petition calls for more facilities

- Edel Kenealy

As a petition calling for more facilities for Cambuslang teens gathers pace, The Reformer is asking people if they believe young people in the town need more outlets for fun.

We reported last week of growing concern in the town that Cambuslang Park was being abused by youths who had “nowhere else to go”.

Residents had reported excessive noise and litter in the park over the past four weeks.

On Wednesday the Reformer went to the Park to ask locals if they are backing the petition.

Daniel Mullen, who lives beside the park, said: “There are plenty of facilities, there are pitches but no one seems to use them. You maybe get the odd grandparent bringing children down for kick about.

“I think they should maybe fund more clubs that are supervised.”

Joan Montgommery, who attends the park regularly with her three small grandchildren, said there should be increased provision for young people in the town.

“It’s a large park, surely they could have a surpervised activity in the park for them. I would support calls for the young people to have a designated area.”

Tatyana Barnes, who moved to Cambuslang from Ukraine several years ago, said young people need to have more respect for what they already have.

Tatyana, who attends the park every day with her children and dog, said: “I think for these people it doesn’t matter where they go, they will ruin things, they will vandalise things, they don’t realise what they have.

“It doesn’t matter what facilities you give them, that’s the nature of these people.
