A Rutherglen teacher who spent five years in jail after being wrongly accused of rape has been moved to tears by messages of support from former pupils.

Jim Boyle, 60, was caged in 2005 after being found guilty of raping two girls numerous times in the 1970s.

But four years later, the verdict was quashed and he was cleared of any wrongdoing at a re-trial in 2010.

In March, Jim told his remarkable story to the Reformer.

And since then, dozens of former pupils at All Saints Secondary in Glasgow, have taken to Facebook to show their support for their former teacher.

One person wrote: “What a shame. Mr Boyle was a cracking teacher. He was my guidance teacher and gave me a lot of support when I needed it, hope he gets his life back on track.”

Another said: “I loved being part of All Saints RC secondary school because of this man, hope this truly finds an end and you can move forward.”

One pupil said they had never doubted him, saying: “Amazing teacher.

“I never believed he had done any of this.”

And one wrote simply: “He was my favourite teacher.

“Such a shame what happened to him, he had such a huge influence on me and always got the best out of his pupils.”

Many of the messages were posted on a Facebook group called Glasgow Gospel.

Responding to the pupils, Jim said: “On reading your messages my eyes brimmed, my heart expanded with pride and I felt I had been blessed by Glasgow’s finest – you are the people who make Glasgow.

“It was my pleasure to work with you all – in fact it was a privilege and ‘a buzz’. I can never adequately thank you for your heartfelt reflections, the faith and trust you have shown me.”
