Lang embark on a signing spree
McColl brings 12 new names into the squad
Cambuslang Rangers manager Paul McColl has made 12 new signings as he looks for backto-back promotions.
The Somervell Park boss has raided under- 21 side Tower Hearts and bolstered his squad with experienced players from fellow junior teams.
The young Hearts side proved a sticky obstacle for Rutherglen Glencairn last season and many of the players that beat the Glens to the title will join McColl’s ranks.
Dangermen Alessandro Saverse and Dale Simeon will appear in the blue and white of Cambuslang in August along with Callum Nolan, George Scott, Dylan Hendry, Marc Houston and Ryan Kerr.
And with a mixture of youngsters, McColl has added former Glencairn striker Mark Tait to his forward line as well as Robert Haliday from Lea Rig AFC, David Dunn formally of Lanark United, Colin Boylan of Newmains and Hal Bohme from Giffnock North.
Commenting on his latest additions, McColl told the Reformer: “We have raided Tower Hearts and brought half a dozen of them to Cambuslang.
“We have two centre halfs, a winger, a couple of midfielders and forwards all signed up.
“There is some good young defenders there and Alessandro has scored a few goals for the under 21s so I’m hoping they all gel together with the team we already have.
“I had seen them a few times and we played against Tower Hearts in a friendly last season and they ripped us to shreds. A couple of clubs were chasing them so I’m glad we’ve got them.
“David Dunn signed from Lanark who used to play for Clyde and Mark Tait was a proven goalscorer when he was at The Glens.
“We’ve still got a few trialists to come in and, with a bit of fitness, they might be able to do us a turn.”
Despite the club having so many new faces at Cambuslang, McColl managed to secure the services from several of his players from last year’s promotion winning team.
Recruits who officially re-signed last week included: Ryan Macbeth, Bob Davidson, Kieran Chalmers, Stuart Davidson, Thomas Kilmartin, Jamie Macleod, Iain Stewart and captain Neil Newman.
The team started pre-season training last Saturday as McColl kept a watchful eye over his new squad.
“I don’t think I’d like to have done it,” he joked. “It was a good wee shift and they all did well.
“We did a bit of fitness and then some ball work.
“There is still time for other players to come in and we’ll have a look at some of the trialists.
“I’m pleased to keep some of the players from last season. Even though we’ve lost a few I think the team has become stronger.”
Defender Martin Brogan was among the players to leave Somervell along with both Andrew and Ryan Scanlan, Nicky Moore, Matt Lynch, Chris Faulds and Ross Gillen.
McColl also revealed George Fotheringham will join his coaching staff for the 2016/17 campaign.
