Midge on song at Holyrood

-

Cambuslang singer/songwriter Midge Ure took centre stage at the official opening of the fifth Scottish Parliament on Saturday.

The Ultravox frontman performed a version of the Robert Burns’poem A Man’s A Man For A’That at the ceremony.

Parliament was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen. Poems by Edwin Morgan and the Scots Makar, Jackie Kay, were read out, with musicians from the National Youth Choir of Scotland also performing before the historic Riding Procession down the Royal Mile.

Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey was attending the event for the first time and said she had been“tapping her toes”during Midge’s performance.

She added: “The mix of music, song and poetry in many languages reflected the modern faces of multicultural Scotland. The poem by Makar, Jackie McKay, moved many of my fellow MSPs to tears.

“The speeches by both Her Majesty the Queen and Presiding Officer Ken McIntosh both called for calm heads in these troubling times. The first minister’s words offered reassurance to our EU citizens

“The Riding following the ceremony was a spectacle to see. A mix of community and voluntary groups from across Scotland and across cultures paraded down the Royal Mile.

“Being able to join the walk with my cross party colleagues was an honour.”
