Clare chopped at shops

-

Rutherglen Exchange shopping Centre came to a standstill on saturday when one resident had her hair shaved off in the middle of the arcade.

Clare McKechnie went for the chop to fight the stigma surrounding mental health.

The 38-year-old mother, who suffers from anxiety and depression, wanted to show you cannot always know a person just by looking at them.

Dozens of shoppers at Rutherglen Exchange turned out to support Clare McKechnie who had her hair shaved on Saturday to raise awareness of the stigma surrounding mental health.

Brave Clare, 38, was also raising money for mental health charity SAMH.

For the past few weeks she has been sporting a series of wacky hair styles to prove you cannot always know a person just by looking at them.

But her latest creation is the most drastic yet, with her long locks getting the chop.

She was joined by her husband Colin, 47, who had dyed his hair a bright shade of red the week before, and See Me community champion, Richard Monaghan, who travelled from Moffat especially to get the chop.

Clare, who suffers from depression and anxiety, reckons the event had the desired effect of having people speak about mental health.

And she admitted she had grown fond or her new style.

“The one thing I’ve noticed is I can really feel the wind going through my bristles,” she laughed.

“The event went really well. There were lots of people watching and I got a big cheer.

“I kind of like the haircut. A few people have said I look like Sigourney Weaver, and I certainly won’t complain about that.

“My kids can’t keep their hands off it, they keep feeling my head. They weren’t sure about it before hand, especially my eldest daughter May who thought I would look silly, but she’s now satisfied I don’t.”

Clare has so far raised £1,200 for SAMH while her hair will be donated to the Little Princess Trust.

Her hair was shaved off by Lynn Cowan of LA Hair.
