Rutherglen Reformer

A rough guide to finding Pokemon in Rutherglen

- Murray Spooner

Pokémon Go has been sweeping the nation since it was launched in the UK and many have been taking to the streets in a bid to ‘catch ‘em all’.

The Game Boy title and TV show popularised in the 90s is back with a brand new app that has users wandering around the country.

It uses real Google maps twinned with your smartphone’s camera to create an augmented reality in which wild Pokémon creatures pop up wherever you are.

And now the Reformer has finally got to grips with how it all works, we sent myself, reporter Murray Spooner, out on the road to see what he could find.

If it’s a Drowzee you are looking for, Rutherglen is the place to get one. From outside the Shawfield Stadium to the end of Main Street, you are never far from a yellow, pot-bellied friend.

Unsurprisingly, the Main Street is filled with PokeStops -a location to stock up on pokeballs and special items such as eggs and incense to lure characters to your location.

You can pick up essentials at the Aspire Church and, if you’re in the mood for a drink, the Stirrup Cup and the Millcroft will sort you out with one along with more equipment for your journey.

You can also find stops at the Rutherglen Castle Plaque off King Street and the Hebron Presbyterian Church.

In terms of catching Pokémon, I caught a Jynx, Zubat and a Krabby in the area and was able to battle his characters at the gym next to Rutherglen Library.

A gym can also be found outside Rutherglen Glencairn’s ground and you will find more Drowzees, a Weezing and a Nidorina lurking about the streets.

If you are in the Burnside area of town, you will find plenty of Gastlys and Clefairys near Tesco and around the Post Office.

The Rutherglen Lawn Tennis Club on Viewpark Drive is also a handy stop for more items for your travels.

Down towards Cambuslang, Pokémon are quite easy to catch if you head past the train station -which is also a PokeStop- and along to the Cambuslang Parish Church.

There are plenty of Weedles, Zubats and Pidgeys near the Cambuslang Gate and a gym at the Cambuslang Trinity Church.

To my luck, I bumped into an Electabuzz outside the Royal Bank of Scotland branch and picked up a Nidoran as he made his way to a PokeStop at Cambuslang Rangers’ Somervell Park.

After finishing up, I can see why it would be fun but I don’t really think it’s my kind of thing.

But at least it gets people out and about and helps keep them fit. Just make sure you are watching where you are going and keep an eye on kids playing the game to keep them safe.
