Social media war on selfish parkers

Photos of cars posted online to shame drivers

- Douglas Dickie

The person behind a Facebook group aimed at shaming selfish drivers in Cambuslang has spoken exclusively to the Reformer about their campaign.

The Parked Like a K*** Cambuslang page features pictures of vehicles parked on pavements or across multiple bays in car parks.

Based on the hugely popular Parked Like a K*** Glasgow page, the page has built up a small but dedicated following since it began back in January.

Now, the resident responsible has told motorists to expect their picture to turn up online if they block walkways in the town.

The admin, who wishes to remain anonymous, describes themselves as a “middle-aged parent” who was fed up seeing other parents struggle round cars with prams.

They said: “Vans on the pavements and things like that have bugged me for years.

“When you ask people to move, they just give you a mouthful of abuse. When you tell them they aren’t meant to park there they just say ‘well, where am I supposed to park?’

“I just hope people think twice before parking if they see the page. Perhaps people will take that extra two minutes to park responsibly.

“I know parking in Cambuslang is limited, and that’s something the council need to sort out, but it’s not fair on pedestrians. It could be life threatening going on into the traffic.”

According to the admin, the worst areas for selfish parking is near schools, especially on Brownside Road, West Coats avenue and Buchanan Drive.

They say the worst offenders are van drivers and parents doing the school run.

They said: “It’s a mix of selfishness and laziness. A lot of it is entitlement.

“They have no concern for other road users. Just this morning there were two vans parked on Greenlees Road and I couldn’t get by.”

While the page has only a small following, the admin is confident it is having an impact.

“It’s been a bit of a slow burner but it’s picking up now.

“I get a mix of reactions. You get some folk who become very defensive.

“But other members are really supportive.”
