EVERY LITTLE TRULY HELPS

-

Staff at a Rutherglen supermarket have helped create over 4,000 meals for impoverished families across Rutherglen, Cambuslang and South East Glasgow.

Workers at Tesco on Dalmarnock Road have been at the heart of a four-day food drive at the store which raised tonnes of produce for food banks operating in the community.

The annual event saw staff at the store create large displays of items typically in demand by food banks for customers to peruse as soon as they entered the store.

The Rutherglen Reformer previously reported the drive had raised four tonnes of food for Rutherglen and Cambuslang Foodbank. Caroline Baird, community champion at Tesco Rutherglen, explained how the store helped the charity collect essential items.

She said:“We go through the list and order all of that in bulk and make a big display at the front of the store. It works well because people see what they need to donate, people don’t have to go and find it.

“The first year we did it it took off. The food banks get a lot more donations as people pick up something as soon as they go in.

“Our regular customers know what weekend it is happening and there are people who come in for that. Two boys put £50 in each and spent all that on food for the foodbank. “It’s nice to know how many people are helping.” Taking place every summer, the food drive donations are counted and analysis shows the 2016 drive amounted to approximately 4,149 meals. Those meals were shared between Rutherglen and Cambuslang Foodbank and Glasgow South East Foodbank.
