Cambuslang Park gets awarded a Green Flag

Third year for prize

- Douglas Dickie

Volunteers who work tirelessly at Cambuslang Park have seen their efforts recognised after the facility was handed a Green Flag Award for the third successive year.

Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful announced the honour last week, saying the park helped set the benchmark for outdoor space across Scotland.

Friends of Cambuslang Park was launched in 2011 with an aim of improving the park and again making it a focal point of the whole community.

Edward Cais, chair of the Friends group, said: “The Friends of Cambuslang Park are extremely pleased to share the Green Flag Award for Cambuslang Park with South Lanarkshire Council for the third consecutive year.

This success may be attributed to the all-year-round working between the two partners.

“The park is in great shape and continues to attract positive comments both from local users and visitors from further afield.

“Any residents who are unfamiliar with the park and who are favourably disposed towards green spaces which provide for their wellbeing, are strongly encouraged to come to see what the park has to offer.

The friends group hosts a number of events in the park. Recently, the community has rallied round with ideas of how to keep the park clean after some incidents with youngsters.

Cambuslang was one of three parks in South Lanarkshire to share the award which is a benchmark for quality green space.

All parks are assessed by volunteer judges with a background in park management, conservation or ecology.

Dr Lindsay Montgomery CBE, chairman of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “Good quality green space is vital to the health and wellbeing of local communities, families and individuals – that is why it is fantastic to see Scotland’s parks and green spaces going from strength to strength.”
