Fiona given a fond farewell

Beaver leader leaves after 20 years

- Jonathan Geddes

A group of Scouts recently said goodbye to one of their leaders after 20 years of service.

Fiona McAdam, from Burnside, has been helping at the 113th Scouts for two decades, including as beaver leader.

Fiona joined as a parent helper when her older son Gary joined in 1996.

A couple of years later she stepped up to lead the section when the then leader found his work was increasingly making him late for the Wednesday night sessions.

In 2013, Fiona’s service was recognised by the Scout Association when she was presented with the Award of Merit.

Among the highlights of her time with the Beavers has been winning the district football competition, celebrating the group’s centenary in 2009 and organising and taking part in trips all round the country.

However most memorable will be the annual Beaver parent and child sleepover, which was always themed and always great fun.

The Beaver Scouts surprised Fiona on her last evening with a barbeque organised and cooked by former Beavers, who are now in Cubs, Scouts and Explorers.

Fiona was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a magnificent beaver shaped brooch to remind her of many happy years at the 113th .

The Beavers then rounded off with a rousing new campfire song that they had been preparing in secret over the previous few weeks.

Fiona’s retirement was rounded off with a relaxing dinner at the Burnside Hotel with family, leaders and committee members from the Scout group.

Group Scout leader, Graeme Hamilton said: “Fiona has given great service to the young people of Burnside and surrounding areas.

“She has given up 800 Wednesday evenings and many weekends to help educate and develop around 300 young people in that time.

“Her influence and commitment to Scouting are second to none.

“I’m sure we will see Fiona pop in from time to time to keep in touch with this fantastic Scout group that she has been such a strong part of.”

Assistant leader Robert Clements will now take over the reins providing continuity and experience along with leaders David, Logan, Jenny and Aileen.
