McCrorry ready to rule after clinching MGM deal

- Murray Spooner

Former Scottish boxing champion Jordan McCorry is ‘ready to go’ as he prepares for his upcoming fight in a bid to become the best once again.

The Cambuslang boxer, who recently signed a new deal with boxing promoters MGM Scotland, will return to the ring at Bellahouston Sports Centre in October.

Jordan has won nine and lost only two of his 12 bouts since turning pro’ in 2011, and has decided to drop down a weight class from Lightweight to the Super-Featherweight division.

And the 25 year old, who stays in Drumsagard, is hoping to put his last fight behind him, which ended in a defeat to Dundee’s Ronnie Clark, and focus on taking more titles.

The two-time Scottish Lightweight champion, formally of boxing promoter Tommy Gilmour, told the Reformer he was back in ‘serious’ training under MGM at the Glasgow Phoenix Gym.

“My last fight was at the start of March in the Scottish Championships but I got beat,” he said. “I wouldn’t say he was better than me on the day but he had more experience and has fought at higher levels.

“I’ll be definitely fighting in October and I’m ready to go.

“By the end of the year I hope to be competing for another title. I decided to sign with MGM because what they were doing looked positive and I want to be in as many fights as I can.

“What Tommy did with me was great but I was just looking for someone to look after me that wee bit more.

“I was ticking over in the past few months but I’m into serious training now and improving my fitness.

“I’ve came down a weight so it will be that little bit harder because your coming down five lbs but it will be beneficial in the long run. As long as you train and eat right then you should be fine.”

Jordan successfully defended his Scottish Lightweight title after he went toe-to-toe with Fauldhouse fighter Sean Watson in Motherwell last year.

He produced the fight of his career to stop his opponent in the third round and retain his belt.

The former Trinity High pupil had beat Richard Barclay over 10 rounds at the Lagoon Leisure Centre in Paisley to claim his first major title as a professional in 2014.

But Jordan, who has trained at the Glasgow Phoenix gym for eight years, hands a lot of his success to boxing legend Peter Harrison.

Peter, from Cambuslang, runs the club in Dalmarnock and has produced some of Scotland’s best fighters in Charlie Flynn and his son Scott who is a former world boxing featherweight champion.

“I’ve been there since I was 17 so it’s been about eight years now,” said Jordan.

“Peter is the best person I could have met. He’s a great guy and would do anything for anybody. He’s a great person to have in your corner as well with all the knowledge and fights he’s won in the past.”
