In memory of Lochlan and in honour of Lilly
Family organise fundraiser for their amazing twins
It should have been one of the happiest weeks in the lives of Laura and David Wright when Laura gave birth to twins in November last year.
But their memories will always remain bittersweet for the couple from Toryglen.
On November 15, Laura gave birth to Lochlan and Lilly.
The pair were over two month premature.
Doctors at the Queen Elizabeth II University Hospital battled for five days to save Lochlan’s life, but sadly, on November 20, he passed away.
Lilly spent the next seven months on oxygen 24 hours a day due to her underdeveloped lungs, but is now on track to make a full recovery having been taken off her oxygen.
At first, doctors didn’t even think Lochlan would survive the birth.
During her pregnancy, Laura, 28, and David, 30, were told his skeleton was not growing properly meaning his lungs had not developed.
But doctors managed to give them five precious days with their little one, and it is because of that Laura is hoping to raise money for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital charity.
“The doctors did so much to even give us those five days with him,” Laura said.
“They also did so much for out little girl. We wanted to give other families the chance we were given.”
Looking back on the days leading up to and immediately after the birth, Laura admits it was like looking at someone else going through the ordeal.
She explained: “It’s just a whirlwind. You have mixed emotions because there is a baby there who is going to be ok but you are devastated about Lochlan. It feels like a lifetime ago, like you are looking in on someone else.
“The memories are bittersweet. You are so aware of everyone around you, thinking they will think you are too happy. It’s so hard.”
Laura, David and their other son, six- year- old Jaxon, were helpless as doctors tried valiantly to give Lochlan the best chance of life.
But eventually, after developing additional complications in his kidneys, the gut wrenching news came that nothing more could be done.
Laura, who works with the Scottish Youth Theatre, said: “David struggled more when Lochlan was still here and I took the strong role but when it came to it...
“We had time with both of them in the one room. The doctors were able to move them together and we were able to get those memories with the pair of them. That was amazing for the hospital to do that.
“They tried different things but eventually his wee body could not take it any more and they had to make the decision.
“It was devastating. It is hard to describe the feelings you go through. It was painful, physically painful. Even if you are expecting it, it is never easier.
“We never had the time to grieve because the very next day we had to go back to the same hospital and the same room for Lilly. Jaxon was really confused at first and was asking where Lochlan was.
“To a certain extent, you know you have to keep going for your other baby.”
Laura has now organised a fundraising night on Friday, August 19 at the 20 Social Club in Rutherglen in memory of Lochlan and in honour of Lilly.
Two days later, she and her friends will take part in a ‘onesie walk’ through Rutherglen to raise even more money for the charity.
Tickets for the night are already sold out but members of the public can continue to support their fundraising efforts on their Just Giving page.
Explaining her motivation, Laura said: “The doctors were amazing. The job they and the nurses do is unbelievable.
“They were always so positive and that really helps when you are in a situation like that. We didn’t even think we would get to meet him. It’s still difficult.
“You get good days and you get bad days but we try and look at it as a positive that we got those five days we never expected.”
