MEP calls for yet another referendum

- Murray Spooner

Last week MEP Alyn Smith suggested a referendum should be held on ditching the Queen if Scotland ever became independent.

As one of the contenders for the SNP deputy leadership, Mr Smith wants to see a “proper debate” on the issue but stopped short of saying if he supported keeping the monarchy.

He made the call during a live web chat on social networking site Reddit which stirred up a debate online.

And as the suggestion created some controversy around the country, the Reformer decided to ask the people of Rutherglen what they thought about the proposal.

John Birrell of Burnside was in agreement with the MEP.

He said: “I think we should get rid of them if we go independent. Why should we keep them?”

Although John Gallagher of Cambuslang was pro-independence, he told the paper he wouldn’t mind keeping the monarchy.

He said: “I am for independence but I have no objections to the monarch. Personally I think they should carry on. I would say I am quite happy with them.”

Ann Dingwall from Rutherglen said it was all a matter of timing.

She added: In time I think we should but in the short term no.”

However, her husband Iain said: “I do think they should go. It’s a bit dated isn’t it? “
