Spartans made to suffer in hammering on opening day

Amateur football returned to Rutherglen and Cambuslang last weekend and served up a feast of goals.

Fernhill United got off to a great start in the Premier Division with a 3-2 win over Cranhill United.

Springhall Spartans, however, had a torrid opening day and suffered a 6-0 hammering away to Hillview.

In Division 1 Albion ran out 4- 0 winners against Castlemilk United and Rutherglen Rovers slumped to a 5-0 defeat away to Gartferry.

Thirty-two teams were placed in eight groups to establish who would be playing in the rest of the divisions this season.

All teams will play each of their three opponents home and away and whoever finishes first will play in League 2A, second in 2B, third in 2C and fourth in 2D.

This week’s results were: (group 3) Cambuslang Football Academy 4-2 Townhead Thistle; Croftfoot Amateurs 1-3 Provanmill Thistle (group 6).

Fixtures for Sunday, August 14, Premier Division: Calderside v Castlemilk Dynamo, Cranhill United v Springhall Spartans.

Division 1: Castlemilk United v Eastend Tower, Rutherglen Rovers v Albion.

Group 3: Cambuslang Football Academy v Red Staars Baagrade

Group 6: Croftfoot Amateurs FC v Broadwood Clyde.
