Spar­tans made to suf­fer in hammering on open­ing day

Am­a­teur foot­ball re­turned to Ruther­glen and Cam­bus­lang last week­end and served up a feast of goals.

Fern­hill United got off to a great start in the Premier Di­vi­sion with a 3-2 win over Cran­hill United.

Spring­hall Spar­tans, how­ever, had a tor­rid open­ing day and suf­fered a 6-0 hammering away to Hil­lview.

In Di­vi­sion 1 Al­bion ran out 4- 0 win­ners against Castlemilk United and Ruther­glen Rovers slumped to a 5-0 de­feat away to Gart­ferry.

Thirty-two teams were placed in eight groups to es­tab­lish who would be play­ing in the rest of the di­vi­sions this sea­son.

All teams will play each of their three op­po­nents home and away and who­ever fin­ishes first will play in League 2A, sec­ond in 2B, third in 2C and fourth in 2D.

This week’s re­sults were: (group 3) Cam­bus­lang Foot­ball Academy 4-2 Town­head This­tle; Croft­foot Am­a­teurs 1-3 Provan­mill This­tle (group 6).

Fix­tures for Sun­day, Au­gust 14, Premier Di­vi­sion: Calder­side v Castlemilk Dy­namo, Cran­hill United v Spring­hall Spar­tans.

Di­vi­sion 1: Castlemilk United v Eas­tend Tower, Ruther­glen Rovers v Al­bion.

Group 3: Cam­bus­lang Foot­ball Academy v Red Staars Baa­grade

Group 6: Croft­foot Am­a­teurs FC v Broad­wood Clyde.
