Cast announced for The Broons stage show

Rutherglen Reformer - - News - Jonathan Geddes

A Rutherglen playwright has seen the cast announced for his next show.

Rob Drummond has written the theatre adaptation of much loved Scottish comic strip the Broons, which will come to the Theatre Royal in Glasgow from Monday, November 7, until Saturday November 12, following a nationwide tour.

Now the cast have been announced, with Kern Falconer as Granpaw, Paul Riley as Paw, Joyce Falconer as Maw, Tyler Colins as Hen, John Kielty as Joe, Laura Szalecki as Daphne, Kim Allan as Maggie, Euan Bennet as Horace, Kevin Lennon and Duncan Brown as The Twins, and Maureen Carr as the Bairn.

Kern Falconer ( Granpaw) has appeared on television in Hope Springs, Wedding Belles and River City, all for BBC Scotland and has a host of theatre credits to his name.

Paul Riley (Paw) is an actor and comedian, who won a Scottish BAFTA for his work with Still Game in 2006.

He also wrote and starred in Dear Green Place for which he won a Scottish BAFTA for Best Entertainment.

Joyce Falconer ( Maw) is best known for playing Roisin in BBC’s River City, a role she played for seven years. Other television work includes Scot Squad 2 (BBC Scotland) and Beyond the Bothy ( BBC), with theatre credits including Granite and The Last Polar Bear (National Theatre of Scotland) and a UK tour of the Vagina Monologues.

Earlier this year Rob spoke to the Reformer about his work on the show.

He said: ““I went right back to the 1936 annual and I read one from every decade,” he said.

“What stays the same is that the characters are very sturdy, very reliable and it’s about finding a contemporary setting for those characters to be in. A lot of what makes The Broons is about the family and sticking up for each other.

“They’re laughing in the face of adversity and laughing at mundane things. In Scotland we like to look at ourselves as not taking ourselves too seriously and that’s what the Broons are like. They’re real and they pierce pomposity.”
