Euan will learn from golfing competition
Cambuslang lad competes against the very best
A Cambuslang teenager has gained valuable experience after competing for the title of best junior golfer in the UK and Ireland.
Euan Arbuckle met some of the best golfers in the game while playing in the American Golf Junior Championships at Gainsborough on August 17.
The 13 year old made it through to the grand final after a closely fought qualifying competition at Playsport Golf in East Kilbride last month.
Euan, who only became a member of Cathkin Braes Golf Club in Rutherlgen 18 months ago, managed a net score of 89 in the one-day tournament.
His dad Robert believes his son will learn from the experience after playing against Dean Shaw-Radford, who shot a net 64 and finished second behind overall winner Kyle Homer of Dublin, who shot a net of 61.
He said: “It was a great achievment to qualify because there was only 45 kids from the UK who did. It was good experience for him.
“Euan did okay but he didn’t win. He finished middle of the pack.
“He didn’t have his best day. I don’t know if the occaision got too much for him but he enjoyed the day.
“The boy he was playing was excellent and he finished second overall at the end of the day. I don’t know if Euan was a bit overawed by that.
“Next year he’ll play in more tournaments and we’ll get him some lessons.
“That might have helped when he was under pressure and didn’t know what to do.”
Euan travelled down to the event in Gainborough, home of manufacturer Ping, and had a tour around the factory.
And it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the youngster on the day as he won a putting competition and a prize for his efforts.
It is also likely that Euan will feature on Sky Sports later this year after they covered the event.
The programme is believed to launch a month after the event has taken place.
The Cathkin High pupil, who plays off 28, won qualification for the competition with a win in the best net score category with a net round of 54 in East Kilbride on July 21.
