Ward boundaries are changed in towns
South Lanarkshire Council say they have accepted proposals to change ward boundaries in Rutherglen and Cambuslang.
The authority will also have less councillors from next May’s local elections, with the figure dropping from 67 to 64.
The Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland’s final recommendations for changes to ward boundaries were accepted by the Scottish Government earlier this month.
They include large parts of Burnside becoming part of the Rutherglen South ward.
Currently, the boundary runs down Burnside Road and Stonelaw Road to Greystone Avenue.
From next May this will extend eastwards to part of East Kilbride Road and run down Hawthorn Walk.
Rutherglen Central and North’s boundary will be extended southwards to incorporate Overtoun Park and parts of Calderwood.
Cambuslang East will lose Vicarland, with the new border with Cambuslang West extending as far east as the railway bridge on Hamilton Road.
Rutherglen South will have an electorate of 10,865, Rutherglen Central and North will be 11,322, Cambuslang West 11,937 and Cambuslang East 11,568.
Geraldine McCann, head of administration and legal services, said: “The council has now received confirmation that the Scottish Government has accepted the boundary commission’s proposals for South Lanarkshire wards.
“These will reduce the number of elected members from 67 to 64.
“In common with other local authorities affected by the proposals, South Lanarkshire Council had initially made submissions to the boundary commission challenging the findings of the review and latterly made representations to ministers not to proceed with the changes at this time.
“We are disappointed that ministers have not been persuaded.
“However, the council will now work with these new arrangements as we continue our preparations for next May’s elections.”
