Back to the 80s for a wedding to remember

Show cast can’t wait

- Douglas Dickie

Five talented residents from Rutherglen, Cambuslang and Toryglen are heading back to the 80s with a musical theatre group.

Mhairi Dunsmore, Michelle Brown, Brian Lynch, Colette Dunsmore and Emma Donohoe will be donning leg warmers, shoulder pads and huge hair in The Minerva Club’s production of The Wedding Singer.

Set in 1985, the show follows rock star wannabe Robbie Hart who is New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer. When his own fiancée, Linda, dumps him at the altar Robbie decides to make every wedding he gigs as disastrous as his own. It is left up to sweet- natured Julia and her cousin Holly to lure Robbie back into the limelight, if she can resist the advances of Wall Street bad boy Glen.

Colette Dunsmore, 48, from Cambuslang has ben a member of the club for 30 years and is currently president.

She said: “The Wedding Singer is a new show that not many people will have seen before, and for anyone for whom the 80s is their era, the music and costumes are just great.

“I’m really pleased with how rehearsals are going and would encourage anyone to come and see this fun-filled production.”

Fellow Cambuslang resident Bryan Lynch, 34, a Minerva Club member of two years, will wed real-life fiancée Michelle in the show’s opening number.

He said: “I have done the show before with Theatre South and really wanted to do it again, so I was delighted when I found out Minerva were doing it. I love the music and it’s a really young, energetic show – very over the top and full of drama. I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Wedding Singer will be on at Eastwood Park Theatre, Giffnock, from Tuesday, November 8 to Saturday, November 12. Tickets cost £13-£16 and are available from any cast member, by emailing tickets@ theminervaclub.com or by booking online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/ event/147467.
