Exciting transformation is underway at Angels

-

Over the years, Angels has moved with the times and now, it is undergoing its largest transformation to date.

Very soon, it won’t just be the place to go in Uddingston but in the whole of Lanarkshire.

It’s clear from the work that has already started that this is not just a quick freshen up.

“I knew I had to have something in place to do when I stopped playing – I didn’t have a trade and had ignored my education because of football.” Standing in the midst of the works at Angels, where only two weeks ago customers enjoyed the sunshine on the terrace, Harry Hood – Celtic legend – reminisces about buying his first pub some 46 years ago.

“I was on a bus with the rest of the players after a game in Edinburgh and we were going past this pub, the Sherwood Manor in Viewpark and I overheard Jimmy Johnstone saying to Billy McNeil that it had potential. The following Monday, I put an offer in.”

Although his football career was far from over, Harry continued to keep his eye on the trade. He spotted a pub in Bellshill called the Iron Maiden, which was said to be the ‘in’ place to go. “I thought to myself, if Bellshill can have an ‘in’ place, Uddingston can too – and that’s how Angels came about. It has always been our flagship and today, Angels continues to stand its ground.

“I don’t know how many pubs can say they’ve had consistent growth every year for two decades” he said with pride.

Angels is part of Lisini Pub Co. – winners of the DRAM Scotland Family Business of the Year award only last month.

Harry’s children Lisa, Siobhan and Nicky have taken the reins and are devoted to continuing the successes of their Dad.

Lisa Wishart, MD, explains: “You can tell with the recent retail outlets opening up and the development to the transport infrastructure in the area, that Uddingston is really on the map.

“We are building two new ‘spaces’, extending out and building up. There will be cosy nooks, grand dining areas and state of the art guest rooms - it’s going to be the best of the best.

“Crucially, we will be open throughout this transformation and we are committed to continuing to serve our loyal customers and want them to come with us on this exciting journey.”

On that note, on October 13 from 5-9pm there will be a customer appreciation evening at Angels – all are welcome to come along for wine and nibbles, meet the team and directors, discuss the plans and see images of how stunning it will look when the work is complete next year. “Bear with us during this transformation” Lisa concludes: “We may not be so easy on the eye for now but we are looking forward to taking Angels in a whole new direction for customers old and new”.
