Witty romantic comedy is a-laugh-a-minute

- Andrea O’Neill

East Kilbride Repertory Theatre Club are to bring a modern rom-com to the stage from the pen of acclaimed Scottish writer Liz Lochhead.

Perhaps best known for her poetry and other theatre work, such as Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off, this time Liz focuses her writer’s eye on a woman named Susan who volunteers in a charity shop on Glasgow’s Great Western Road, in the Rep’s latest production Good Things. Love by name and love by nature, Susan finds herself suddenly single and staring the ‘Big Five-O’ in the face.

With the help of her friends and fellow volunteers, she prepares to tackle the modern dating scene.

Among the shelves of unwanted clothes and bric-a-bac, she attempts to find love while juggling the demands of a confused, elderly father, a daughter in the throes of aggravated adolescence and an ex who unfortunately still has the power to wound.

Set in the charity shop on three different days in one year – 6th January, Valentine’s Day and Christmas Eve – Good Things is a poignant, hilarious and sympathetic play with a lot to say about finding love the second (or third or fourth) time around.

The romantic farce premiered at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow, toured in a production by Borderline and now EK Rep Theatre Club brings it to the Village Theatre in East Kilbride from Wednesday, 19th to Saturday 22nd October at 7.30pm.

The Times described the “supremely humane writer” Liz Lochhead’s play as “delightful and funny” but still “touching and emotionally true”.

And The Guardian dubbed it a Cinderella story “for fortysomething’s”.

Good Things is directed by Rep stalwart Jean Macmillan and produced by East Kilbride Rep Theatre. Curtain up 7.30pm. Tickets for the show are priced £8.50/£6.50 concessions.

Season tickets are also available at a cost of £25.

This gives theatre-goers entry to five plays plus the annual one act festival in May, RepFest.
